Vid.me is a video site very similar to YouTube. User can either upload anonymously or they sign up for a free account.
The website is very similar to Reddit.com’s model of posting and upvoting the content you like. Vid.me’s front page is full of user submitted content that’s made it’s way to the top. Getting to the front page of Vid.me means you have a popular and maybe viral video on your hands.
However, you won’t be able to make money off your videos because as of June 2015, they don’t have a system where users can monetize their content.
This may change in the future, but if your looking to monetize videos, then YouTube is the better choice.
You can change the thumbnail of your video, but for this one I left it as the default thumbnail.
With the video player, you can also embed it inside of your website.
You can make the player, autoplay, mute, or repeat when the user clicks on your video.
One of the biggest difference’s is the lack of ads you see on the site. I’ve looked and as of writing this article (June 2015) there are none.
The site is clean, and straightforward.
Vid.me vs YouTube – Signing up
The sign up process is so simple, that it took me less than 1 minute from imputing my chosen user name, to the backend, where I can upload videos.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being the easiest) the sign up process for Vid.me is 1. Even if you are the most computer illiterate person on the web, it’s fast.
YouTube makes you sign up for a gmail account, and you have to jump through more screens just to get to your upload and settings page. This is a hassle.
With Vid.me you can have the options to allow people to download your video. Some people may want to disable this option, and you can do so in the setting page of Vid.me.
Your Own Custom URL
They also have shortlinks for your Vid.me URL. For example, if you want to find me on Vid.me all you have to do is go to: http://vid.me/journeyto1000 and you will see my videos page.
Now YouTube, does things differently. If you want a custom YouTube URL here are the requirements:
- 500 or more subscribers
- Channels is at least 30 days old
- Channel has uploaded a photo for the channel icon
- Channel has uploaded channel art
Once you meet these requirements you can register:
You have to link your YouTube account to your website to qualify. This is my YouTube custom URL—>
Why do you want your own shortlink URL? It makes it easier for people to find you. If you wind up meeting Joe Blow, or Jane Doe on the street, all you need to do is mention URL + (insert your name).
When you sign up for YouTube, they give you a default channel URL that looks something like this: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM2pVP7NLU62VTf1JpRH3Mw/videos. <---No one on planet Earth wants to copy and paste something like this.
Porn Vid’s allowed
This needs no explanation. Vid.me allows them and YouTube doesn’t. However, users can’t upload copyrighted content.
The Vid.me player loads fast and is a great competitor to YouTube. For this article, I was easily able to upload my test video and embed in this post. Vid.me also lets me track how many views and current viewers I have watching the video. Currently, Vid.me doesn’t have the analytics power of YouTube, but is something for people who don’t want to go through that hassle.
As of June 2015, you can’t monetize your Vid.me videos, but who knows if this will change in the future.
