Back when I was a perfectionist and didn’t post anything, I would always stress over the details. I would spend hours customizing my Genesis wordpress site, optimizing SEO, and doing everything except write.
I suspect a lot of people are in the same boat. They spend hours over the details more than they do the actual work.
1 – Get momentum
When you chase momentum you are taking success to its highest levels. Success is like climbing a small mountain, looking around, and going,”Well that was fun. Now what?”
But with momentum you just keep climbing those mountains because the fun is see how far you can go.
For me, each blog post is a small mountain. I do the time and the work but I’m like, “So what? I’m still not where I want to be, so I’ll just keep going.”
2 – Have a vision for your life
As described in the book Gorilla Mindset visualize your perfect day. Use your 5 senses and make it as real as possible.
If you’ve ever beat yourself up over a failure, you already know how to visualize. The opposite is true. You can visualize a better future for yourself and the answers will come if you take action:
Do you wake up alone? Are you with a man, woman, or maybe the family dog is asleep at your feet.
What do you do after you wake up?
Maybe you pray, meditate, play with your kids.
When do you go to work?
Do you start working immediately in the morning, or get a late start?
Where do you wake up?
Is it in a large city, a small cabin in the woods, or maybe a hammock in Thailand.
Why do you wake up?
Do you wake up because you have to be somewhere, or because you are excited for what the day may hold?
-Gorilla Mindset by Mike Cernovich
My vision involves visiting Japan and traveling around for a bit. In order to get there I have to craft a message, create posts, write, and come up with ideas. It’s not easy but having a vision helps the pieces come together.
Jim Carrey is also big on visualzations:
3 – Don’t be ashamed of what you want
Besides being a perfectionist, another thing that held me back, was I was embarrassed of my writing. I thought it wasn’t good enough, and I’m not no Mark Twain.
Then one day, I just said to hell with it, and just started more action than I knew what to do with. This is like the 3rd posts I’ve done today and I’m just going to keep going.
I also tell myself, “I’m going to write 1000 blog posts and cringe at the aftermath.”
When you want to start producing content and get serious about doing so here’s a summary:
- Get momentum and sustain it.
- Have a vision and go for it.
- Don’t be ashamed of what you want.
If you have a vision, take action, there will naturally be moments of momentum. It comes and goes, it just depends on how far you’re willing to take it.
I also recommend reading the book, You Are the Placebo, in order to know why all this visualization stuff works. Anytime you repeat something, you are subconsciously manifesting that reality. People do this all the time when they have a negative image of themselves. They manifest negative people and actions as a result. You may think it’s new-age B.S., but read this book and certain topics will be cleared up.
